The Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) continues to strengthen consumer protection in real estate transactions. Here are the key updates effective in 2026:
Enhanced Disclosure Requirements
- Multiple representation — brokerages must provide clearer disclosure when representing both buyer and seller in the same transaction.
- Material facts — agents have expanded obligations to disclose material facts that could affect a buyer's decision, including known neighbourhood developments and planned infrastructure.
Trust Account Protections
- All deposits are held in RECO-regulated trust accounts
- Annual audits ensure compliance
- The Consumer Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) provides an additional layer of protection
Continuing Education
All registered agents and brokers must complete mandatory continuing education cycles, including courses on:
- Anti-money laundering (FINTRAC) compliance
- Ethical obligations and professional conduct
- Land transfer tax and regulatory updates

You can verify any Ontario real estate agent's registration at reco.on.ca. Look for:
- Active registration status
- Brokerage affiliation
